2011 Student Award Winners for Excellence in Community Service
Porsche Lumpkins: In March of 2009, Porsche Lumpkins, then a college junior, established a free after-school program at Monroe Alternative Middle School called the J.E.W.E.L.S. Academy, which stands for “Joining Education and Wellness with Excellence in Leadership and Service”. She established this academy to help public school students overcome the failures of the education system by giving them an opportunity to learn about college so that they would begin to value their primary education.
Sridhar Vedachalam: Sridhar Vedachalam has been actively involved in the OSU chapter of the Association for India’s Development (AID) since his first year at Ohio State as a graduate student in 2005. During his time with AID, he has been the project coordinator for 3 projects, worth $14,000 over the course of more than 3 years. He also served as the Treasurer of the organization for two years. In 2007, he was elected president of AID, and spearheaded important projects, such as a fusion music concert by an Indian band which was held to raise money for flood relief efforts in the Indian state of Bihar, and also to fund the organization for other projects.
