LeFevre Fellows are high-ability students who are interested in service learning. All Fellows enroll in a two credit hour Service Learning course at Ohio State Newark during Autumn and complete 60 hours of service in winter and spring as members of service teams.
ARTS & SCI 1102H: Hispanic Gastronomy: Introduction to Hispanic Culture as Represented in Culinary Practices

Introduction to Hispanic cultures through food. Students learn about Hispanic cuisine and prepare dishes, and reports on the history of the dishes, for presentation to a group of area middle and high school students.

Students enrolled in this class will spend 2-3 hours weekly leading exercise classes for Licking County schoolchildren with ADHD or disabilities affecting memory and attention. Research shows that exercise mitigates the symptoms of ADHD and improves academic performance, sometimes dramatically, in all populations. Students enrolled in the course will be educated on the nature of ADHD by a nationally known ADHD academic coach (Jodi Sleeper-Triplett) and trained by instructor Jennifer Anthony on implementing an exercise program called SparkPE. Although students enrolled in this class will not be working as traditional ADHD academic coach/tutors, they will benefit from 12 hours of training in ADHD coaching, which can be put toward the 30 hours required of those wishing to be certified as ADHD coaches. Students who enroll and receive training in the fall will be expected to enroll in the spring class as well.

Are you a well-organized student interested in earning course credit while gaining experience in the growing field of ADHD coaching? This course will provide you with 12 hours of training in ADHD coaching in preparation for serving as a peer mentor for other students struggling to stay organized. After training, you will provide 1-2 hours per week of mentoring support per week (a one-hour weekly organizational meeting and follow-up emails and texts to help your mentee stay on track, organized around your own schedule). Jodi Sleeper Triplett, a nationally recognized ADHD coach, will provide the training, which will count towards the 30 hours required for certification in this growing field. If you're interested in education and working with others, this is a great opportunity. An application is required. Email the instructor at cope.38@osu.edu for more details. Credit is variable (2-3 credits). Students who enroll and receive training in the fall will be expected to enroll in the spring class as well.
