Service-Learning Initiative

On June 1, 2010, students of Nursing 511S: Community Care of Vulnerable Populations awarded Columbus Public Health and LifeCare Alliance $2,250 each for their work in immunizations and diabetes at the Pay it Forward: Strengthening Communities through Student-Led Philanthropy reception and presentation of community awards. Through a grant from Ohio Campus Compact’s (OCC) Pay it Forward Program and administrative/implementation support from OSU’s Service-Learning Initiative, Nursing 511S has been able to add actual funding and implementation of projects to a course that previously focused on identification and analysis. In the Winter 2010 offering of Nursing 511S, students worked with community organizations to gather data on the health and social needs (and assets) of a target vulnerable population in the community. In the Spring 2010 offering, students developed and disseminated an RFP, collected and reviewed proposals, and selected project(s) for funding. In the Autumn 2010 offering, students will work with the organization(s) to implement proposed projects and to conduct outcomes assessment.
