Support for Learning through Service
Service-Learning is a form of experiential education characterized by student participation in an organized service activity that:
- is connected to specific learning outcomes
- meets identified community needs
- provides structured time for student reflection and connection of the service experience to learning
The Service-Learning Initiative supports development, implementation, and evaluation of sustainable service-learning courses and encourages community-based scholarship across the curricula of The Ohio State University to enhance student learning, develop student civic engagement, and foster ongoing collaboration with local and global communities.

Spotlight
Service-Learning Course Spotlight
In order to help service-learning scholars make connections and learn about new projects, we will seek to periodically highlight a new service-learning course on our website. Courses will be shared both here and in the “Spotlight” section of our SLSR updates. If you are interested in having your course highlighted, please let Harmony know at hcox@esue.ohio-state.edu.
Inside Out featured in the Newark Advocate Inside Out (SOCIOL 2211) was the subject of an article for the Newark Advocate. Inside-Out courses at Ohio State Newark bring college students and incarcerated individuals together in a classroom setting to develop a partnership between institutions of higher learning and prison systems nationally. The article focuses on the course’s closing ceremony and features quotes from students as well as the experiences of inmates, and discusses the transformative effects of the course for all who participate. You can view the article here: http://www.newarkadvocate.com/article/20121202/NEWS01/312020006/InsideOut-course-exposes-inmates-higher-education For more information on the course, contact Angela Bryant at bryant.74@osu.edu.
